Alright what have we got here. Another series based off a video game. Let me get this out …I haven’t seen or played any of the games from the franchise so bear with me if you’re a fan and I give it a score you don’t like. Now from what I do see it certainly isn’t Street Fighter(read: awful) so we can at least find something in this to enjoy. Because I haven’t played the game I have an outside viewpoint and can view it as such and not be let down because “They didn’t include the X to Y” or “The added so much between X it too from Y”. I’ll be let down for other reasons instead.
Details details details
Glancing over the voice acting cast I noticed most of the cast have worked on the games in the franchise so fans will hear familiar voices. Most of the Staff have worked on video game adaptations and have worked together on similar projects. Odd fact: The director Itsuro Kawasaki worked on the Chrono Trigger OAV. Moving on the the OP is “JAP” by Abingdon Boys School who have been doing work on anime since they formed and the intro animation that follows with the music features a dancing brigade(?) of troops. The Ed is “Break & Peace” by Dustz and features mostly stills and portraits for closing. The composition for seems to fit well enough but as I haven’t played the games I guess it’s fair that I don’t give points for that. The Character design is very over the top and can be a bit silly in places. However hats off for the rockabilly biker gang minions and the motorcycle horse. Over the top yes, but still awesome.
I cannot comment on the plot because I haven’t played the game and I figured it to be the typical “theatrical punchy kicky fighty with intermissions” So I have to take off some points, I just hope the game’s cut-scenes were not so boring.
The Score
Obviously I have to take points off for some of the non-comedic shenanigans and so on. I enjoyed it but I cannot say this is something I would advise people to see. And while it has what I consider personally redeeming overall stepping back I think I’d lose interest after a while. So this comes down to a two out of five. If you wished for a Dynasty Warriors anime this is where it’s at and enjoy but other wise you may want to pass on this for something else.
