Tokyo Mew Mew

Similarities – Magical Girls & Adventure

If Sailor Moon’s strong female cast with unique superpowers excited you, then Tokyo Mew Mew promises viewers a similar experience. Tokyo Mew Mew is a dominant female cast that has amazing personalities and magical abilities.

As the heroines of Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew’s female protagonists transform into more powerful individuals to protect their planet from evil demons. Their power comes largely from their love and other elemental properties. It’s a series with great action and emotional scenes that will keep you entertained.

Tokyo Mew Mew follows Ichigo Mumomiya as she wakes up from a bad date with her crush. She starts to exhibit cat-like mannerisms after she wakes up. After she rescues her lover from harm, she learns that she is capable of transforming into Mew Ichigo (a cat-like magical girl).

A group of researchers inject her with Iriomote Cat genetic material. They did this because they needed her to defend Earth against aliens. Although she’s overwhelmed by their offer, they inform her that she’s not the only girl they injected with this DNA. Thus, the anime follows Ichigo and her quest to gather the remaining magical girls before it’s too late.

Cardcaptor Sakura

Cardcaptor Sakura

Similarities – Romance & Adventure

Cardcaptor Sakura is a younger sister series to Sailor Moon. Both anime features girls needing to find an item of some kind to maintain their world’s peace. Furthermore, Cardcaptor Sakura’s main character, Sakura Kinomoto establishes new friendships and meets mythical beings with astronomic power. The transformation sequences in both animes are spectacular.

Cardcaptor Sakura doesn’t have a large cast of magical girls, though. The allies Sakura teams up with don’t carry the same mystical abilities as she does in terms of concept and design. However, Sakura’s allies are just as fleshed-out and likable as the sailor scouts Sailor Moon meets on her journey.

Cardcaptor Sakura follows Sakura Kinomoto, who stumbles upon a strange book called “The Clow” that’s filled with Clow Cards. Inadvertently, the book malfunctions and the cards scatter all over her hometown. This instance also awakens the book’s beast guardian, Keroberos.

Sakura is instructed by him to gather all Clow Cards back as they are a serious threat to the world. He appoints Sakura as the new Cardcaptor and gives her the Sealed Key, a weapon that’ll allow her to seal the beasts back into the cards they came from. With the help of Keroberos and her best friend, Tomoyo, Sakura must find all Clow Card beasts and seal them back into their cards before it’s too late.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Similarities – Challenged Female Roles In Anime

Puella Magi Madoka magica and Sailor Moon revolutionized the anime world for magical girls. While Sailor Moon helped solicit the notion of girls in action roles, Puella Magi Madoka Magica aimed to change viewers’ perception of magical girls. The series featured action scenes and an engaging storyline. They also had memorable soundtracks that echo the influence they had on the subgenre.

Madoka Magica, however, is darker than Sailor Moon. It chooses to showcase the cruelties of becoming a magical girl by zoning in on the character’s mental health and awareness. Madoka Magica’s cutesy art style clashes well with the darker atmosphere it develops as the anime progresses. The anime captures the same charms and action as a magical girl show, even though it has a darker aesthetic.

Madoka Magica is the story of Madoka Kaname (and Sayaka Miki), who meet Kyubey, a mysterious cat-like being. Kyubey offers them the chance to fulfill their deepest desires in exchange for being magical girls. Homura Akemi, a girl from Japan, warns them against accepting the offer. Madoka, Sayaka ignore her, and the deal is done.

All the perks promised by Kyubey are granted to them, and everything goes smoothly. Unfortunately for Madoka and Sayaka, they’ll later discover the deeper and darker truth behind Kyubey’s offer. Their lives as magical girls are followed by the devastation that comes with their job.

Princess Tutu

Princess Tutu

Similarities – Characters & Themes

Like Madoka Magica or Sailor Moon before her, Princess Tutu revolutionized the world of magical girl anime. It takes the iconic Ugly Duckling fairy tale and mixes in iconic magical girl tropes to form something that’s fresh and unique. Princess Tutu, like Sailor Moon is a girl who makes stupid mistakes despite her magical powers.

They also have to balance school and their magical lives. However, each series raises the stakes and makes it harder for them to manage their lives. Furthermore, both series aren’t afraid to tell darker story arcs but tend to lean toward harmonious story beats. Although you won’t find any other magical girls besides Princess Tutu in her series, she’s sure to give you the same charm and charisma you’d expect from Sailor Moon and the other scouts.

Princess Tutu is a duck named Ahiru who leads a very mundane life. One day she meets Drosselmeyer who transforms Ahiru into a human girl. Ahiru is also granted the ability to transform into Princess Tutu (a skilled ballet dancer).

Ahiru is Princess Tutu and can alleviate pain by performing ballet. Drosselmeyer gives Ahiru the mission. Ahiru accepts. He also informs her that she must find the lost shards of a prince’s heart. Because he gave his life to keep an evil raven away from causing chaos, this is what he meant. This journey will lead Ahiru down paths of hardship as she struggles to help the prince forge his own “happily ever after.”

Pretty Cure

Pretty Cure

Similarities – Magical Girls Fighting Crime

Pretty Cure follows two middle-school girls named Nagisa Mizumi and Honoka Yokishiro. Although they are paired together, their lives are quite different. Nagisa is her school’s popular star lacrosse player, while Honoka is simply regarded as the soft-spoken intelligent girl in her school. Their common bond is their double life as magical girls.

Nagisa and Honoka go by the aliases Cure Black of Pretty Cure and Cure White Of Pretty Cure. They team up with Mipple (female companion) and Mepple (female companion) to stop the Dotsuku Zone. Nagisa, Honoka and Mipple must also find seven Prism Stones to stop this evil force and restore the Prism Hopish.

Pretty Cure, like Sailor Moon has fantastic transformations and action scenes. Similar to Sailor Moon’s plot structure, Nagisa and Honoka embark on a quest to stop an evil force from causing trouble. Pretty Cure also teaches characters the importance of teamwork, and they have magical companions who can help them on their adventures.

Pretty Cure also follows the “villain of the week” formula at times. Each enemy they meet tends to be more powerful than the one before. This allows them to develop and grow their abilities and character over time. If you’re looking for a more action-packed magical girl series, check out Pretty Cure.

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

Similarities – Action

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt feels like a parody of the magical girl genre. From its highly sensual characters and dialogue to its over-the-top fight scenes, Panty & Stocking with Gartbelt delivers a thrill ride of epic proportions. Its art style is rather unique compared to Sailor Moon as it’s more in line with cartoons you’d find on CartoonNetwork or Nickelodeon. Its animation is more vibrant and stylized, however.

Despite these differences, Panty & Stocking has a lot in common with Sailor Moon. Panty & Stocking spend time fleshing out its world and characters. Some episodes are dedicated to the development of these characters, as well as portraying them irresistible women. The transformation sequences feel in line with what you’d expect from Sailor Moon, despite leaning more on the raunchy side.

Special weapons are also given to the girls, which can be tailored to their individual personalities. Their villains also range from low power to high. The show also has a few side characters who are likable and can be developed alongside the female stars.

Panty & Stocking with Gartbelt follows the fallen angel sisters Panty and Stocking Anarchy, who’ve been kicked out of heaven for their poor behavior. They must kill all ghosts in Daten City to get back into heaven. Unfortunately, neither girl takes her duties seriously. Panty will sleep with any man she meets, while Stocking will prefer to stay home and enjoy her favorite desserts. Therefore, the anime follows these unruly angels’ daily lives and their nonstop battles with Daten City’s ghosts.

Magical Doremi

Magical Doremi

Similarities – Characters & Adventure

Each villain will have their own agendas, which makes Magical Doremi feel fresh each episode. Magical Doremi’s protagonist also embarks on a search quest as Sailor Moon does.

Harukaze Doremi follows Magical Doremi. She believes she’s the unluckiest person in her universe because of her terrible family. One day she finds herself in a fight with a witch, and eventually becomes one. All because she was offered a chance by the witch to be one.

Unfortunately, she’s not good at witchcraft either. Therefore, the anime follows Doremi and her friend’s journey to mastering the mystical arts.

Kill La Kill

Similarities – Super Powers & Action

Kill La Kill’s animation is highly stylized and energetic. The film features strong female characters who wield power weapons to defeat supernatural villains. Like Sailor Moon, Kill La Kill features a female protagonist that doesn’t have the best brain power. This character is always in funny situations. She’s also accompanied by humanoid and mythical beings.

Kill La Kill is different from Sailor Moon in that it sexualizes its male and female characters. There isn’t any full-on nudity in the series, though. The series does show its characters making crude gestures and sometimes wearing inappropriate attire. However, if you can overlook this small setback, you’re in for an exciting time.

Kill La Kill follows Ryuko Matoi, a girl who’s looking for her father’s killer. She is led to the Honnouji Academy by Satsuki Kiryuin. Ryuko does fight Satsuki but ends up with a brutal beating. Ryuko escapes from the fight and heads home before anything worse happens.

Ryuko finds a piece of clothing once he’s returned home. This article of clothing comes to life once it makes contact with Ryuko’s blood. It introduces itself as Senketsu and attaches itself to Ryuko’s body. Although Ryukjo’s weirded out at first, she senses immense power coursing through her body.

Now armed with Senketsu and her father’s old Scissor Blade, Ryuko plans to confront Satsuki. However, she’ll need to defeat her four powerful lieutenants if she plans on doing so.

Little Witch Academia

Similarities – Magic & Light-Comedy

Little Witch Academia is a fantastic magical anime. Like Sailor Moon, it’ll offer you enough laughs and wholesome moments to keep you smiling. You will love the quirky characters, as well as their memorable and likable personalities. It’s another anime with a female main cast, and each character contributes something fresh and exciting.

Little Witch Academia’s main character, Atsuko Kagari (Akko for short) is a lot like Usagi in many ways. She’s a clumsy girl who doesn’t understand how to wield magic. She’ll later learn to control her powers and become a better witch because of her training. Like Usagi, you’ll see all of Akko’s failures unfold before your eyes. This will allow you to connect with her till the anime’s conclusion.

Little Witch Academia is better than Sailor Moon in terms of animation and visuals. Studio Trigger likes to exaggerate it’s characters facial reactions in each of their productions. These facial reactions enable the anime to produce slapstick humor. It’s also reminiscent to the quick visual gags you’d see from Usagi and the other sailor scouts.

If you’re looking for another comforting magical anime with a clumsy protagonist, check out Little Witch Academia.

Yuki Yuna is a Hero

Yuki Yuna is a Hero

Similarities – Action & Super Heroes

They’re all transported to an alternate supernatural world. They are able to transform into full-fledged magical girls super heroes during this time. Each one of their abilities is unique and each has its own set of capabilities. This world’s overlord also informs them of their mission, which is to defeat every Vertex they come across.

Yuki Yuna: A Hero, like Sailor Moon features a female-driven narrative in which heroic females battle supernatural entities to keep their world peaceful. Both groups will have to balance their mundane and heroic lives, as expected. Both anime feature amazing and spectacular transformation scenes that will amaze viewers.

Yuki Yuna, a Hero, is a little darker than Sailor Moon. The anime portrays magical girls in an awful light and shows the inner and external consequences of their position. Yuki Yuna: A Hero has more horrific fights that tie in with its darker themes. Essentially, the girls will bear  grave wounds from their battles with the Vertexes.

If you have no worries sitting through a series that depicts females in wholesome and grittier situations, Yuki Yuna is a Hero’s worth checking out.
