Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter Harry Potter is home to many iconic characters. Many characters are instantly recognisable by casual movie-goers and fans, including Voldemort and The Boy Who Led. Draco Malfoy is the antagonist of the series. His son, Draco Malfoy, appears in all the films and Broadway plays.
Draco, one of Harry’s first students to meet him on the Hogwarts Express “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” is a famous character who was attacked by a hippogriff and attempts to stop Harry from going to school in their sixth year. He was also seen freaking out over a spider and being transformed into a ferret by Hermione’s wand. Tom Felton played Draco in the screen. He even channeled Draco’s personality in his first encounter with Emma Watson.
While the pure-blood is well-known for his bullying behaviors, there were other times when he wasn’t so bad. Many people don’t know much about him, such as the fact that he was averse to the ideals his audiences are familiar with. Grab your trunk and join me as we discover the truth about Draco Falfoy.
He is the sole child
It shouldn’t surprise that Draco is an only child. It is unknown if Draco intended it, but a look at Draco’s family tree will show that Lucius, Draco’s father, was also an only child. The Slytherin often talks about his aunts, uncles, and cousins from his mother Narcissa’s family. However, the only relative he mentions from his father’s side is Abraxas, his grandfather. Draco has one child and continues the trend.
Narcissa is third in line of three daughters. She has a large extended family. Rowling’s family tree, which is archived by The Harry Potter Lexicon shows that there are many people, including Harry’s godfather Sirius Black who have been exiled from the tree. These people are considered traitors. These exiled people make up the Black family, which is bigger than the Malfoy. Very few couples have more than one child.
Named for the stars
He inherits his father’s name as an only child, but his mother gave him his name. Narcissa, a Black mother was also born to Bellatrix. She has a unique theme when it comes to her baby names. Narcissa was her only child. She was a House of Black member and named her children after constellations. Draco, which in Latin means “dragon”, is a constellation first described by Ptolemy, a Greek astronomer (via Constellation Guide). It can be viewed from any part the Northern Hemisphere, at any time of day or night.
As many characters in the series, Malfoy almost had a different name. Malfoy, which in French means “bad faith”, suits his character well, but his original name was Spungen. It was removed and made Spinks in Rowling’s original 40-student list. It was then crossed out again, but it was reinserted as Draco malfoy. Rowling acknowledges that Smart was one his working names, even though the name isn’t on the original 40 characters list. It is more appealing (via Wizarding World).
His family is closely connected to nobility
The Malfoy family’s roots go back to Normandy, and the Norman Conquest in 1066. Armand Malfoy was part of William the Conqueror’s team and offered what is believed to be a magical service. Wizards could show their magic to the Muggles because there was no Statute of Secrecy. While it is not clear what Armand did for Duke de Normandy’s, wizarding historians have shown that it was not always honest work. (via Wizarding World).
His ancestor was forced into British culture and assimilation. He was a flatterer of the wealthy and nobility, and worked his own way into their ranks. Through flattering the wealthy and nobility, the patriarchs were successful in building wealth for their families.
As audiences have discovered, many of his traits were passed down from his family. Armand did inexplicable work for an invader nation, sought power with any person he believed worthy, and believed he and his family were more powerful than other wizarding families and the Muggles. It’s not surprising that Draco behaved the way he did when he was young. It is a fact that it has been in his family tree for almost a century.
The double standard of his ancestry
Even though they were hostile to Muggle-born witches and wizards, even before adopting the Statute of Secrecy, they preferred to be associated with Muggles of wealth and high status. Lucius Malfoy was the first Lucius Malfoy to attempt to marry Queen Elizabeth I. The Malfoy clan is open to whatever they want. One time they had a connection with Muggles who they thought were worthy of their friendship and support. These social networks were so important to them that they were against the Statue of Secrecy’s enactment via Wizarding World.
Rumours suggest that the Malfoys may have accumulated their wealth through Muggle means. To build their wealth they would have used Muggle assets such as the London Stock Exchange and had it converted by Gringotts into wizarding currency. They used their in for Muggle land acquisitions and to increase their estate. William the Conqueror Muggle granted them the manor where their family still lives. They wouldn’t be where we are today without Muggles (via The Gamer).
Future generations of Malfoys may deny that any such thing has ever happened, but history and evidence do not support their claims.
He almost went to Durmstrang
Durmstrang Institute was one of the participating wizarding school in the Triwizard Tournament during Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire. It is well-known for the loyalty of its headmasters, and the types of wizards who have graduated from it. Gellert Grindelwald was a pupil at the school. He is one of the most prominent Dark wizards in history (via Wizarding World). Although the school is listed as being in Northern Europe and visitors are required to erase their memories so they can’t be led back to it again, Rowling stated in an Accio-Quote interview that it was probably in Sweden or Norway.
Draco tells students of the school that his father considered sending him to Durmstrang instead of Hogwarts when he visited Hogwarts in Draco’s fourth-year.
You’ll be able to tell.” He went because his family knew the headmaster and to continue their Dark Arts education. His mother did not want him to travel that far away from his home, so the Slytherin didn’t go. It is not clear why she didn’t want her son to go to school abroad. This could have been because they were loyal to Voldemort and their place in British wizarding society. You could also say that she wanted to be near her son.
His family didn’t buy tickets to the Quidditch World Cup
Despite their wealth, the Malfoys appear to not want to spend much. They were present at the Quidditch World Cup in Harry Potter, and the Goblet of Fire. This is an excellent example. Arthur Weasley claims that the stadium can accommodate 100,000 people. The Top Box seats were reserved by the Malfoy Family. After a substantial donation to St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies (the wizarding hospital), the three were invited to be Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge’s special guest.
It’s rare that you have the opportunity to sit in a box with the Minister of Magic. The Weasleys were able to secure tickets to the Top Box because Arthur had connections with the Department of Magical Games and Sports, which only Ministry workers have. Lucius is not a Ministry worker so he had no choice but to try to obtain one of the 20 seats. It was a wonderful way to make an impact. The Minister for Magic is a Top Box member which only enhances their image. Why would the richest wizarding families choose to sit in regular seating?
He supported Umbridge’s control of the school
There were many changes in leadership positions at Hogwarts during Draco’s fifth-year at Hogwarts. It wasn’t long before an elite group was formed under the guidance of a professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts. Dolores Umbridge, a pink-clad woman, taught a subpar Defense Against the Dark Arts course. She was also the founder of the Inquisitorial Squad of Harry Potter, and the Order of the Phoenix.

Umbridge personally selected the students for her dirty work. They could not only take away students’ house points, but could also open and inspect mail. It shouldn’t surprise that the entire group was made up of Slytherins who were happy to report directly to Dumbledore. They were able to bully students by taking points away from Harry because he doesn’t like him. If Draco had been under the supervision of another professor, headmaster, this would have been impossible.
He is an expert on Occlumency
Harry begins taking Occlumency lessons with Professor Snape in his sixth-year to protect his mind from Voldemort. Although he’s terrible at it, he still tries. Rowling confirmed that Draco was the only character who wasn’t terrible at it. In an interview with MuggleNet 2005, the author stated that Draco “would be very gifted at Occlumency.” Draco is someone I think of as someone capable of compartmentalizing his emotions and his life, which I have always done.
Snape attempts to get into Malfoy’s mind in “Harry Potter the Half-Blood Prince” and it turns out that the young Malfoy is able to use Occlumency. Draco tells the Potions Master that he does not want Voldemort to “butting in”.
His aunt Bellatrix could have been the one who taught him how to hide his thoughts. Snape wasn’t the only one to have done this, and there isn’t any evidence that either his parents were skilled enough. It was vital that he could hide his thoughts about Voldemort’s mission because it was critical that no one knew. If you were going to kill the headmaster, it would be best to keep the secret.
Voldemort’s punishment was his father’s failure to fulfill the task
Voldemort doesn’t often give teenagers such a critical task. Why was Draco trusted to kill Albus by Voldemort He wasn’t. His father was to steal a prophecy from the Department of Mysteries that spoke of Voldemort’s eventual defeat. He was unable stop Harry, Ron, or Hermione from stopping Voldemort.
Lucius was sentenced to Azkaban prison for his mistake. Voldemort made Draco take a Dark Mark to prove that he knew how badly he had screwed it up. He didn’t expect the teen would survive the effort. Lucius was unable to find a way to help his son, so it was the ultimate punishment. The mission was successfully completed, even though the Slytherin wasn’t chosen to complete the task as Snape and Dumbledore carefully planned.
However, the Malfoys didn’t regain their status as Draco wasn’t the one who cast the spell against Dumbledore. Lucius, along with the rest of the Death Eaters, was able escape Azkaban. He had to give Voldemort his wand and surrender his home. Voldemort was rejected by the Malfoys.
After attending Hogwarts he began studying Alchemy
Draco wasn’t like other Malfoys. His family’s wealth meant that he didn’t have to work. Draco chose to study academics over joining Dark wizards like his father in order to pass the time. He enjoys alchemical manuscripts, but not doing any actual work. He does read the instructions for creating the Philosopher’s stone, but he doesn’t attempt to make it himself (via Wizarding World). Alchemy was taught at Hogwarts to NEWT-level students but it wasn’t widely available when the Slytherin attended.
He didn’t abandon some family interests, however. He did not adhere to the same religious beliefs of his parents but he still enjoyed their luxury lifestyle and wealth. The Malfoys owned several antiquities collection, one of which was filled dark artifacts. Draco saved the collection and made sure that it remained with the Malfoys after the war. The Ministry raided Draco’s home during Draco’s second year at Hogwarts to try and find the collection. Lucius created a secret underground chamber to stop the Ministry from finding his collection.
His wife died due to a blood curse
Many believe Draco married Pansy. But he was actually married to another Slytherin student. Astoria, the younger sister of Daphne Greengrass’s peer, was Malfoy’s young bride. They had a son together, Scorpius hybrid Malfoy. He attends Hogwarts with the Golden Trio’s children during the epilogue to “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.”
His parents didn’t approve of her. He wanted to marry someone who shared his values, even though Astoria came from the Sacred Twenty-Eight. Draco and the Greengrasses collaborated to overcome their prejudices against Muggle-born wizards. Lucius and Narcissa did not like this. Their son stood firm and was married to Astoria.
Their marriage didn’t last long. A curse was placed on one of his wives’ ancestors. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child described the curse as a curse that could manifest at any time. Astoria suffered from weakness after the birth, and she died in the summer of Scorpius’ third year. The Malfoys were forced to withdraw from the outside world due to Astoria’s fragile condition and rumors about their son’s father.
He didn’t raise his son with pure blood mentality
Draco & Astoria believed that pure blood wizards were superior. However, Draco & Astoria decided not to pass these beliefs on to their son. Instead, they raised Draco to be more open to Muggles and to accept wizards and witches who aren’t pure bloods. This led to tension at family events because the older Malfoys kept their beliefs despite changing their views on Voldemort (via Wizarding World).
This more open lifestyle allowed Scorpius to make friends with those his grandparents considered “blood traitors” or unworthy of their friendship. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child sees him become friends with Albus, Harry’s son, who was sorted into Slytherin unlike the rest. Scorpius doesn’t mock him or make him feel excluded. Instead, he is delighted to have Albus as his friend on the journey towards Hogwarts. Due to the many rumors regarding their lives, neither is very popular. It’s highly unlikely that Scorpius would have been friends with Draco if he had taught him the same values as he did. He would likely bully him because he was the black sheep in his family.
