The Twitter account Hideo KojimaKojima Production videogame company released a statement condemning fake news on Saturday. This tweet comes in response to Damien Rieu, a far-right French politician who falsely identified Kojima’s assassin as former Prime Minister Shinzo abe. According to the statement, the company might pursue legal remedies for the incident.

#KojimaProductions strongly condemned the spreading of fake news and rumors that contain false information. We will not tolerate such libel, and may consider legal action in certain cases.

Rieu apologised for the tweet. Rieu said, “I naively accepted a joke for info. It was impossible for me to believe that someone would make a joke about someone’s murder, but I failed to fact-check before sharing. I sincerely apologize to #HideoKojima, and to #MetalGear.

Rieu previously shared a Tweet claiming that far-left was responsible for the assassination of Nara’s campaign speech on Friday. The tweet included three photos. Hideo Kojima. Two photos of Kojima were accompanied by images of Che Guevara (Argentine Marxist Revolutionary). Kojima is seen in one photo holding a bag with Guevara on it, while in the other he is posing next to a piece of framed art.
