The world has changed. It is the new normal. I was born in the middle of the 70s and lived my entire childhood through the 80s. The internet was not available. Computers were available but few people owned them. I was born poor and I started working for my money when I turned ten. I spent the money on candy and arcade games as well as comic books. Comics were an exciting medium in the 1980s. It was a way to escape reality and let your imagination run wild.

I still have many comics in boxes. They are all sealed in plastic bags and placed on acid-free boards. In the early 1990s, I stopped buying any comics. This was mainly because I had bills to pay. In the mid-2000s, I tried to buy comics again but was stunned at how high their prices had risen. That’s when the start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe came about, and it was glorious. While there were some classic superhero TV shows and movies, the MCU revolutionized superhero movies.
However, things have changed over the last few years. Many of the characters I grew-up with have been changed and political narratives were introduced to comics and movies. I’m sure there were some political overtones and suggestions in past books, but somehow this new wave felt more overtly in your face. Marvel’s latest TV and movie series are now unrecognizable.
Because I am aware of how political entertainment has become, I hesitated to write this. For me, this isn’t about politics. It’s about good stories that return me to the escapism and fantasyland I knew growing up.
So I was excited when I learned about Rippaverse Comics’ first book Isom. Eric July is an author with a good following. He is an active commentator on cultural and political issues. However, his comics seem to be purely entertainment. His first book was expensive, which caused me some sticker shock. But then I realized that this was all he did. As an owner of a website, I understand how hard it is to run a website.
I’m hopeful that July, even though he seems to be at the forefront of political commentary will keep it to a minimum, or even disappear from his new comics. July has penned a “code of ethics,” which you can find on his website. He seems to be on track and I believe that Isom will lead to something amazing.
Thank you so much! IsomWe are excited for July, his team. Social media is a volatile and interesting beast that has many faces. The political side of it has fangs that yearn for blood. Rippaverse Comics must focus on those who are not interested in politics and culture wars and produce content that takes us back to a time we cherish.
This could be a significant moment in comic book history if July stays the course. I have ordered a copy Isom#1. After I get it, I will give a thorough review.
