Chisato, everyone’s favorite character. Popular anime poll site Anime Corner has found Lycoris or Chisato near the top of polls almost every single week. This anime has no source material or manga and is completely original, so it’s no surprise that people are fascinated by Chisato. The long-awaited sequels are proof of this. But Who is Chisato
We can’t understand why Chisato is so beloved without first stating her personality. She is charming from the outside. She is kind, bubbly, and caring. She is a happy person who does all she can to make others happy. Even at her own expense. She is resilient and doesn’t let down even in stressful situations. You’ve seen her play the innocent, happy protagonist trope in anime such as My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer. Despite her horrific upbringing she refuses to kill anyone. Instead, she uses rubber bullets.
But this isn’t her only personality. She can sometimes be numbingly cold, as she is when she talks with Kusunoki at the DA. At the touch of a button, she can change her appearance to match her opponent’s. She’s overbearing, sweet, and kind to yakuza members, until they break their agreement; then it’s all war. We’ll get to that point in the next section.
Based on the previous point, we can conclude that Chisato excels in three main categories. She can see every detail, and her brain can calculate it all in seconds. This allows her to predict the opponent’s actions and then decide the best course of action. These responses can be executed because she is fast, athletic, and powerful.
The Alan Institute’s Shinji Yoshimatsu noticed these extraordinary abilities and decided that Chisato has the natural talent to become a hitman/assassin. How can the Alan Institute assist Chisato and help her on her path to success? It’s a good thing Chisato is not suffering from a congenital cardiac disease.
Chisato was able early on to tap into her talents. Because of her weak heart, she collapsed immediately after every training season. Mika, an agent for Lycoris, gave Yoshimatsu this information. She used Alan Institute’s influence to obtain a state of the art artificial heart for Chisato. Mika was offered the chance by Yoshi to make Chisato one of the most dangerous hitmen the world has ever seen. He wants to see his talent for being a killer flourish.
This is the sad truth about Chisato’s talent, and the fate the Alan Institute considers the best for her. As you can see in the series, Chisato prefers to help others. She even used rubber bullets in order to avoid being killed. We will only know the outcome of her life from now.
Chisato’s mysterious abilities.
Chisato’s incredible abilities are always at the forefront in every encounter. She can dodge bullets. Literally. We don’t know why, but we are learning more about her heart, and her ties with the Alan Institute. In episode 9, we found out that these abilities were what attracted Yoshimatsu’s attention. This isn’t her only talent.
She can predict the future and anticipate people’s actions. We’ve seen it in a game with rock-paper-scissors but we also saw it in Majima’s conversations. She can predict what the other person will say and uses that information in order to steer the conversation in her favor. Chisato has proven herself to be a skilled manipulator, using her abilities to manipulate situations and people in her favor. While she may not wish to kill anyone, her ability predict the future allows her to aim with deadly accuracy.
Chisato’s Tragic Past
This section contains the majority of the spoilers from Episodes 8 and 9. After her electrocutions, Chisato’s artificial heart is removed from her body. Mika then explains Chisato’s backstory to Kurumi and finally reveals to the audience why Yoshimatsu was so invested in Chisato all through the series.
Chisato was a child with congenital heart defects. Her Radio Tower story was well-known. She was slowly dying. When she was still in Lycoris Training, she didn’t have long to live. Mika was close to Yoshimatsu at the time. Yoshimatsu was impressed with Chisato who was being taught at the same time by Mika. Yoshimatsu suggests that a synthetic heart be developed at the Alan Institute by Yoshimatsu. Yoshimatsu warns Chisato that she might not live beyond adulthood.
