She is a gentle, kind-hearted girl who often thinks of her family, especially Chiyo, her great grandmother, whom she affectionately refers to as “Granny”. The Natsugawa Genzaemon Troope, an entertainment troupe that travels around Japan, stops by and the villagers warmly welcome them. After the troupe has finished performing and received their applause, the leader of the troupe spots Hana with some “oyaki,” and transforms into a wild fox in excitement.
It turns out that the leader Genbanojō, and his companions O-Natsu and Shinzaemon, are all foxes who have taken on human forms. Genbanojō hastily negotiates with Hana, telling her that in exchange for keeping their secret, he will grant her one wish. She replies, “I want to let Granny see the cherry blooms.”
