Portland shop named best comic book store in the world

The shop was awarded the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer award in 2022. This is the highest award given to comic-book stores at Comic-Con San Diego.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The best comic book shop in the world is right here in Portland. Comic-Con awarded “Books with Pictures”, the top honor, to their store. Katie Pryde, owner of Katie’s store, believes that the variety of content played a part in her win.

Pryde opened Books with Pictures in Southeast Portland six year ago. She combined her love of comics with stories.

“Creating a space for people who traditionally haven’t had a space in comics — like women, like queer folks, people of color — and kind of create a space for those nontraditional geeks,” said Pryde.

The shop’s goal is not to only carry the finest books, but also to offer a wide range of content.

Pryde stated, “If creators in color are publishing, then we carry it. If queer creators publish, we carry.”

This approach earned the store a place among the five finalists for “Will Eisner Spirit of Retail Award”. This is the highest award given to comic-book stores at Comic-Con San Diego. Books with Pictures also won this award.

Pryde stated, “It means that we’re known as the best comic shop in the world.”

In the United States, there have been only four winners of the Eisner Retailer Award in the past ten years.

Pryde said, “I think that I won because of my vision for the futur because we are really looking at doing something different in this industry not just perfecting that formula that’s been successful.”

Other Portlanders also cleaned up at this event. Douglas Wolk, author of “All of the Marvels”, won the Eisner Award in 2022 for Best Comics-Related Book.

Wolk said, “Winning an Eisner is a recognition by my peers that I have done and liked it,” which was incredibly flattering.

Pryde said, “Winning the award is really validating in that I feel like my vision of what comics could be is a vision which is shared even further than I thought was possible,”
