The Top 10 Love Triangles In Animated Shows


2021 was a fantastic year for animation. It also brought a few romantic subplots. Adding a little romance is one of the oldest tricks in fiction, but love triangles are a fun twist on a normal romance storyline that can spice things up and get fans rooting for their favorites.

A love triangle can be used to bring out the humor or increase the intensity of the plot. Many love triangles in cartoons are led by the protagonist. However, there are some fantastic ones where the supporting characters also play a role. Regardless, each one adds a fun bit of excitement to the story.

Danny/Sam/Valerie

Danny Phantom One of the most loved cartoons of 2000s. Danny, Sam, Tucker formed a fun and relatable group of characters for children.

Sam and Danny developed a romantic relationship over the course the series. Sam, however, had many competitors. It was Paulina at first, but Valerie, a part-time ghost hunter, and Danny began to develop a little romance halfway through the series. Although this love triangle could have been a little more intense, it was still very strong.

Cyclops/Jean Grey/Wolverine

They’re best known for being one of the most romantic comic book couples, but this X-Men threesome has also been a major source of drama and entertainment on silver screens and television.

The trio has appeared in numerous iterations X-Men Cartoons, X-Men, Wolverine & the X-MenAnd X-Men: Evolution. There was a romance between Jean and Wolverine that varied depending on which version. Thankfully, it was eliminated completely in the versions where Jean or Cyclops were depicted as teenagers.

Timmy/Trixie/Tootie

Butch Hartman cartoons did a great job of including humorous portrayals of childhood crushes without making them too big.

The Fairly Oddparents featured two admittedly somewhat one-sided crushes: Timmy’s crush on Trixie and Tootie’s crush on Timmy. Although the two crushes are rarely interwoven in the plot, they play an important part in Timmy’s adventures. He would often go out of his ways to chase Trixie and avoid Tootie, making wild wishes.

Finn/Bubblegum/Marceline

Adventure Time is an animated show with such a rich history and lore that it deserves an Adventure Time movie. Fans will have to settle for the original series. Obsidian. 

The Bubblegum/Finn/Marceline love triangle had some intrusions from a few different characters, namely Flame Princess. The love triangle is somewhat hampered by Finn and Bubblegum, who only have tw0-sided romantic facets when Bubblegum was younger. Things become Bubblegum/Marceline-centric once she returns to normal.

Duncan/Courtney/Gwen

Total Drama Island The ensuing series in the Total Drama While the franchise had many fun characters, the originals had some great relationships.

Duncan and Courtney were the primary relationships in the triangle. Duncan was often asked by Gwen if she would marry Courtney. The love triangle ends in a somewhat common way for love triangles to end: Gwen and Courtney as close friends with Duncan out of the equation for both of them.

Diane/Peanutbutter/Bojack Horseman


Bojack Horseman It is undoubtedly one the most beloved cartoons ever made. Season 1 revolves heavily around the love triangle that the title characters and his work associates: Mr. Peanutbutter, Diane.

In the first season, the love triangle is fairly one-sided. Halfway through the first season, Mr. Peanutbutter is in love with Diane and they are engaged. Bojack on the other side, however, quickly falls in love and falls in love completely with Diana despite her inability to interest in him. Bojack’s actions can have serious consequences in the series. His feelings for Diane are a part of this.

Jimmy/Cindy/Nick

Jimmy Neutron The story follows the boy genius, as well as his friends Carl Sheen and Sheen. Cindy, Jimmy’s academic rival and best friend is also a main character.

The series begins with Cindy and Jimmy as rivals and quarreling enemies. Cindy has a crush upon the stereotypical “popular cool child” Nick. As the series progresses, Cindy’s feelings towards Nick begin to fade and it becomes clear that Jimmy and she have a crush. The series closes with Cindy and Jimmy holding hands.

Ulrick/Yumi/William

Code Lyoko The show featured a surprising number couples, with Jeremy & Aelita being the most prominent couple and the focal point of the story.

William Dunbar was an iconic 2000s cartoon villain. He was also a member the Lyoko crew, and Yumi’s main love interest. Ulrich had a crush upon Yumi since season 1, and he was always at odds with him. Later in the series, their feelings became more open. Yumi began to think of William more casually as the series progressed.

Korra/Mako/Asami

It is always fascinating to see love triangles in which the protagonist is not at the center. It’s even more intriguing to see a complete triangle where all of the members had some romantic involvement.

Korra/Mako/Asami is the only love triangle that truly “completes” popular fiction. Mako and Korra had a lot of “will it or won’t it” moments early in the series. Mako was the initial center point of the triangle. At some point, all three were romantically involved, with Asami and Korra becoming the endgame couple.

The Nowhere King/General/Woman

Centaurworld This Netflix cartoon series features a world that is “half-animal and half-man.” Centaurworld has a likable cast of characters for the most part, but Woman and the Nowhere King do not belong on that list.


The Nowhere King was born as an Elktaur young man who believed he couldn’t be with his beloved woman. He split himself into a human-elk hybrid. While the human half of the Nowhere King married the princess, the Elk half became bitter and became the monstrous Nowhere Queen. Unfortunately, neither side got a happy ending.
