The Woman King Review

General Nanisca, played by Viola Davis, leads fierce female warriors who fight for their kingdom. John Boyega and Lashana Lynn also star. Viola Davis is an inspiring and moving portrayal of courage. The Woman King is unlike any other film that I have seen. Hollywood presents the first epic film about black female warriors. The epic tale, which addresses many difficult issues, features Davis and a stellar supporting cast.
Their journey isn’t just about suffering and pain. They find love, joy and purpose while protecting their sacred way to live. The Woman King will engulf you. Davis is a contender to win every lead actor award. The kingdom of Dahomey is under serious threat. It was established in 1823 West Africa. The Oyo Empire, their larger and more powerful tribal rivals, has attacked Dahomey’s villages. They rape, kill and imprison their victims for the shameful slavery trade.
Portuguese slavers waited for their human cargo at a port. The Oyo accumulated horses and guns under the command of General Oba Ade (Jimmy Odukoya). General Nanisca Davis leads the Agojie (an elite class of female “virgin soldier” women) in a raid to retake Dahomey’s village. With a warning, she returns to King Ghezo (“John Boyega”) with her message. They don’t fear that the Oyo might intrude upon their territory. They must act now to send a clear warning. Ghezo has learned to trust Nanisca and is now more educated that his foolish brother.

Her stubborn Nawi (Thuso mabedu) has now left her. He gave her the palace gates as a gift. Commoners were not allowed to view the Agojie. Nawi agrees to join them, and she decides her fate. Izogie, Lashana Lynn, notices her. She realizes that she holds a very important promise.
Nanisca is not impressed by Nawi’s prideful arrogance. Dahomey makes his tribute to Oyo contingent. They also brought Malik, (Jordan Bolger), an Oyo-biracial Portuguese seamen whose mother was a slave taken from Dahomey. Nanisca is shaken by Oba Ade’s sneer. He is not the first man she has met.

The Woman King is your guide to the world of Dahomey. Gina Prince-Bythewood, Director (Love & Basketball, The Old Guard), beautifully explains the nuances and culture of their African tribes. King Ghezo is flanked by his wives, the eunuchs, Agojie and their loyal guards. His section of palace is not accessible to men.
Nanisca must deal with Ghezo’s troubled favorite wife Shante (Jayme lawson) and the competitive infantry chief Sivuyile Negesi. An intricate plot with many layers is enhanced by a palace plot. Nanisca must convince Ghezo Dhomey to change if they are to survive. Europeans and Oyo want their land, abundant resources, as well as their bodies.

The scenes of violence will touch you. The film shows war and slavery in a realistic manner. The film depicts the most horrendous examples of torture, rape, and other cruel conditions. Prisoners were treated worse that animals. I was disgusted by the slave auctions, sexual assaults, and other cruel treatment of prisoners. The King Woman does not have a soft side. It is crucial for the audience that they understand how stability and wealth in Western countries were built upon the blood of Africa. Nanisca’s fight to save her people is a painful exercise in reflection. Although Nanisca is a strong fighter and tactician she still struggles with regrets and trauma.
Many twists, turns and stories explode into narrative grenades. We see the greatness and horror of Nanisca’s rise as a commander at the Agojie. Davis can do everything and be great actors. Her acting skills are exceptional and she can evoke inner turmoil as well battlefield prowess. It is one of most important films of the year, and The Woman King stands proudly upon its strong shoulders.
The Woman King is a TriStar Pictures, Welle Entertainment, JuVee Productions production. Entertainment One, Jack Blue Productions and Entertainment One are the producers. On September 16, Sony Pictures released the film in theatres.
