Warner Bros. announced the cancellation of the DCEU project. BatgirlI cited several reasons for my decision. Batgirl was set for a late-2022 release from directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. The film would star Leslie Grace as the title role, and also feature a supporting cast that includes Michael Keaton reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Brenden Fraser, Firefly’s antagonist, was also in the cast, as well as J.K Simmons, who reprised his role of Commissioner Gordon.
Warner Bros.’s in-house talent is overwhelming, so it is difficult to figure out why Warner Bros. chose not to release the film. BatgirlIn any capacity, especially since the film has almost been completed. With the film’s directors receiving praises for their efforts on Bad Boys For LifeAnd, most recently, Ms. Marvel, BatgirlIt was to be followed in The Suicide Squad PeacemakersFollow in the footsteps of Batman and continue the DCEU’s return to form. Keaton will also be returning to Batman’s role in 2023, ahead of his appearance in the movie. The FlashWB appeared to have the next phase for the DCEU in mind.
Many were shocked when Warner Bros. announced that the film would not be released theatrically or on HBOMax. One thing is certain: Batgirl’sIn hindsight, cancellation could explain why the film was not present at SDCC 2022. Many believed that Warner Bros. wanted to concentrate on 2022’s bigger releases, such as Shazam! Fury of Gods Black Adam. It is now evident that this was likely because the studio didn’t intend to release it at all. They cited several reasons.
Warner Bros. Cancelled Batgirl
The main reason for the cancellation of Batgirl The film was released in the aftermath of several test screenings. Warner Bros. originally planned to release the film late in 2222. Therefore, tests screenings began just like all major releases to gauge audiences’ reactions. According to a report by The New York PostThe initial screenings of the film were met with overwhelmingly negative reactions by the audience. The movie’s reaction was so poor that Warner Bros. had to cancel it. BatgirlThe DCEU’s future would be too damaged by film.
Another reason for the film’s cancellation was that Warner Bros. has committed to making DC movies big, theatrical, event-style films, and BatgirlIt simply didn’t fit the description. WB was not impressed with the film’s reception, even though it had a budget of $100 million. Black Adam Or Shazam! 2. The studio was still happy with Leslie Grace as the lead actress. Batgirl‘s directing group, and is open for work in the future with them.
What Batgirl Cancellation Means for WB Discovery’s DC Plans
WarnerMedia and Discovery announced their merger in April 2022. David Zaslav of Discovery was looking at a complete overhaul in the way DC characters were used in TV and film. Is it possible to cancel BatgirlIt remains to be seen how this decision will impact these plans. There are however, some ways that this decision could affect upcoming movies centered on DC properties, either for the better or worse.
The first movie that comes to my mind after the cancellation Batgirl The upcoming Blue BeetleSet for release in 2023. Blue BeetleIt was initially approved by HBO Max as an affordable film. Although the film’s budget is not yet known, the mid-budget tag suggests that it will be similar to the budget for Batgirl. Warner Bros.’s reasons for cancelling should this be true. BatgirlIt would be a great movie if it wasn’t a huge, theatrical production. Blue Beetle, This is the current situation set to be another DC release after The Batman. We hope that this is not true. Blue Beetle The DCEU receives a release. This gives it its first Latino character.
The budget for films that are not yet in production for the DCEU is irrelevant. Batgirl The DCEU films that have yet to be green-lit might also be decided by them. Warner Bros. Discovery plans to make huge event-style movies for the DCEU. Batgirl obviously didn’t fit this description according to execs, it is safe to assume that any future DCEU movies to be announced will be on similar levels budget-wise to those of the Aquaman,Shazam! Black Adam Batman?, and Superman franchises of the DCEU’s Snyderverse. If the studio is unable to fulfill their desire for large theatrical releases, they can cancel. BatgirlOnly means larger, more expensive movies for WB Discovery’s DCEU.
With WB stating that they would still like to find somewhere to work alongside Leslie Grace, Adil El Arbi, and Bilall Fallah, this could also mean that the character of Batgirl herself isn’t dead in the water, despite her movie being shelved. Although the film was cancelled is not ideal for those involved, it could still mean that Batgirl’s character could be featured in a DCEU property. It is unclear where that might happen, but WB’s response to the cast of Batgirls and crew makes it clear. BatgirlA return to DCEU is possible, even though Barbara Gordon’s solo debut was not intended to be.
