Storyline of The Borgias

The Borgias conquer Bologna and establish a ruling dynasty. Pope Alexander VI was renamed after he was elected. Pope Rodrigo Borgia. He must use his diplomatic skills (including ruthlessness, charm, and the power of the church’s authority) to maintain his job and life. Through a fortunate break, his desire to be successful was passed on to the children.
The BorgiasSeason 3 – Preview

Rodrigo Borgia (Jeremy Irons), a lead in Showtime’s THE BORGIAS has looked into “The Face of Death” and season three is beginning. It is still unknown if he will make a return appearance to talk about it. The show wouldn’t kill off an important character so it is not a major cliffhanger. Many are eagerly awaiting last spring’s death match results and wondering what the consequences will be.
The Borgas is not the greatest television show, but I have to admit that it’s far from the best. It’s soapy, schmaltzy, and lacks historical accuracy. It’s like The Tudors and, to a lesser degree, Da Vinci’s Demons on Starz. It’s a guilty pleasure period piece full of betrayal and murder, intrigue and sex.
“The Face of Death” makes sex a secondary concern in favor of violence and politics. Cardinals await to learn what happens with their leader. Some pray for his safety while others are hoping for the contrary. Fearing losing their position, they won’t admit it publicly until it is too late. The corrupt leader is being beaten by less involved factions who plan their next steps.

Rodrigo’s family gathered at his bedside. Cesare (Francois Araud), has just confessed his brother’s murder and is now waiting to hear whether his dad is still alive. Lucrezia (Holliday), who sent her infant son away under protection but refused to leave her father’s side. Vanozza (Joanne Whalley), Rodrigo’s mother, has earned her place at his side.
Joffre, the young male, is missing from the show. It’s strange. He isn’t a main character, and is absent in season 2. But he is part of the clan. Why is he not given more prominence in the story? He is still young but the story is progressing. He will be part of the next season. Or will he remain a footnote.
It is less bizarre that Giulia (Lotte Vereek) appears very rarely in “The Face of Death.” Although Rodrigo loves her mistress, in times of great crises, Rodrigo can only allow the legitimate family to be present, and not a girl Rodrigo plays naked game with.

The family’s depravity may not be as bad as it seems, but viewers will still love them. They are the heartbeat and soul of the show. They are sympathetic, but their actions are not resisted. Rodrigo is worthy to live, even if some of his enemies may be more noble. We’ve got to know Rodrigo and his family. We want them all to live because losing will end their adventure, and us lose ours.
Cardinal Della Rovere (Colm Feore) is the man most disappointed in Rodrigo’s awakening. He is the one who attempts to poison Rodrigo. It’s poetic justice that the Pope did it the previous season. Rodrigo survived and, like Della Rovere.
Together with the other Cardinals, Della Rovere returned to the Vatican. However, he may be a little too open when he says he was there because he heard about Rodrigo’s death. It is true that Della Rovere claimed he heard the rumor. However, it can still not be denied. Cesare, however, doesn’t see it that way. He believes Della Rovere is giving up his life. This is what happened to power players like them.

This isn’t the most realistic scenario. There are many plot devices that could explain this apparent slippage of the tongue. This is how THE BORGIAS rolls. It allows one to “figure out” things that can’t easily be proven. This is the only way to move the story along and the target audience won’t tolerate too much uncertainty.
Della Rovere is fortunate that Cesare doesn’t lock him up. He has many friends. He has friends, but they are not very popular. If Rodrigo is ever toppled, Rodrigo’s likely successor seems to be him. His history shows that he is eventually the pope.
We’ll be interested to see whether Della Rovere wins this series. If victory comes at the end, or earlier. In that case, I think he should be made more sympathetic towards the character. I still want him failing, even though he’s in the right.

The Sforza family is another enemy of the Borgias. Cardinal Sforza (Peter Sullivan) is confronted with a difficult decision after Caterina (Gina McKee), asks him to help assassinating the Borgia clan. The good Cardinal decides to put his family first, and Caterina’s plan is foiled.
It’s not clear if Cardinal Sforza can be considered noble. He seems to turn only when he is almost caught. However, I feel he is a bit coward. It’s difficult to see him as a rival, unlike Della Rovere. He is more like a helpless tool, stuck between his powerful family and his boss who is unable or unwilling make a decision about his loyalites. It’s a bit like the rest, but more complicated by circumstance.

As always, Micheletto (Sean Harris) proves to be brave and deadly, as well as an invaluable help to the Borgias. Although it is possible that he might betray them, I am curious to see if that is the case. As long as he fights for his family, it is unlikely that anyone can take them down.
The continuation of “The Face of Death” for fans of the show is fitting, but it’s not a great introduction or example of what great TV can be. It will still be entertaining but it is not high-quality.
