Jeannette responds against her by filing a defamation case, which sets off a national trial.
Jeanette and Kate have an honest conversation in the finale of Freeform’s season. Jeanette finally admits to Kate that she has never seen her at Martin’s house. Just as the teens prepare to drop their charges one against another, Cruel Summer revealed a final twist in its final episodes of season 1. Jeanette may not have seen Kate Martin in Martin’s home before. After breaking in, Jeanette heard Olivia Holt’s Kate calling for help from the basement. She identified herself clearly. Jeanette & Kate both discovered loopholes & grey areas in their stories. Cruel SeasonSeason 1’s finale showed that truth can sometimes be complex.
Why Kate lies about Martin

The majority of Cruel summer season 1 was spent with Kate, who insisted that Jeanette saw Jeanette at Martin’s. After meeting Jeanette in person, and learning that it was Mallory who had made the accusations against Jeanette, Kate released her statements. She kept the truth of her relationship with Martin, from their affair until his self-defense, a secret. Kate’s lies about the kidnapping were twofold.

First, Kate started to love Martin. This is the shocking plot point Cruel Season 1 is that Martin had been gradually grooming Kate ever since their first meeting. This was likely why she fell in love. Kate felt the need to protect him, even though this was due to his toxic upbringing. Her mother taught her that public perceptions are everything. Although she was rebellious as shown by her desire to be with Martin (and her mom), her mother was always there. Her reputation would be damaged if she disclosed the flaws of her story. Kate would rather find loopholes in the law than violate it, and she chose to do this.
Annabelle’s identity explained

A previous episode of Cruel Summer featured Kate repeatedly mentioning Annabelle. Most notable was a conversation she had with her therapist ( , played by Panic’s Lee Eddy). Kate explained that Martin started acting strangely shortly after Annabelle met them. Kate was unable to recall Annabelle’s name when she listened to the recordings again. It wasn’t until the finale that the name was mentioned again. In this episode, it was revealed that Annabelle was Martin’s nickname for his gun. He brought it up when their relationship became one of kidnapping and hostage. He was going to commit suicide, but he changed his mind last minute. Kate took his gun and shot him in defense. It wasn’t Annabelle that mattered in the end; it was what happened after. Kate’s life was forever changed when she married a man. In 1995, Kate was likely a completely new person. This will be obvious throughout. Cruel SeasonSeason 2.
What Kate & Mallory’s Kiss Signify for Cruel Summer Season 2

The Cruel Summer season1 finale featured a surprising moment: a kiss between Mallory Harley Quinn Smith and Olivia Holt’s Kate. They became close friends during the first season. They became so close that Kate was able forgive Mallory after realizing that it was Jeanette who had seen her at Martin’s house. The finale of the season was over and Mallory and Kate had some downtime. They danced together on the streets, then drove around and suddenly Kate kissed Mallory. Mallory smiled and suggested that they were in a relationship.
This moment was a major character development for Kate. At the beginning of the series, Kate was a true southern belle. Kate was a perfect southern belle and had a boyfriend that helped elevate her image. However, Kate discovered that she wasn’t who she claimed to be during Cruel Seasonseason1. Mallory was an unexpected friend that helped Kate discover who she really is. It turned out that she was a person who loved grunge fashion and wanted more information about her s**uality. This is also a sign Kate will continue to explore her inner self. Cruel SeasonSeason 2.
Why Jeanette dropped Kate’s case

The central subplot of the story concerned Jeanette and Kate. Cruel Season season 1. Jeanette settled the multi-million-dollar settlement after they had an open and honest conversation inSeason 1. She actually sued Kate to hide the truth. Jeanette may not actually have seen Kate at Martin’s house but the ending revealed that Jeanette did hear Kate at Martin’s house.
Jeanette’s meticulously crafted testimony that she never met Kate allowed her to portray herself as the victim of the story. After convincing Kate, Jeanette even publicly dropped her claims against her. She became the nation’s new sweetheart by flipping the script in order to win their sympathy. Jeanette discarded her suit as she believed she was covered for something just as terrible.
The True Meaning of Cruel Summer Season 1’s Final

It was as if Jeanette and Kate could continue with their lives, and still find joy, after reaching an agreement. The Jessica Biel-produced series was a final surprise to the audience. Kate was briefly held prisoner in the finale of season 3. Jeanette broke into Martin’s home, as she did throughout the series. Jeanette called Kate to ask for her help. Jeanette knew Kate needed help but she didn’t act. Jeanette was accused by Kate of taking her own life. Cruel Seasonseason 1. She made the conscious choice not to take what was hers.
This revelation has significant implications for Cruel SeasonSeason 2. Jeanette was invited by the network to talk about her story. She was being accused of misconduct in various parts of the country. Jeanette presented a calm, gentle and forgiving persona on television. This façade will probably continue into the next season. This adds yet more layers to the show’s complex web of lies, half truths, and deceit. Jeanette never explicitly asked Kate for assistance. So technically, she didn’t lie about it. However, she played a passive part in Kate’s long imprisonment. The truth is what you see, as the show’s motto says. That theme will be carried on by Jeanette’s revelation in Cruel Season 2.
