Don’t Look Deeper Season 1 : Preview And The Last Episode Explained
Episode 8 of Surface opens with Sophie running. Baden’s murder has been many weeks ago, and Sophie runs to Baden’s empty apartment. As she recalls the past, Sophie struggles to keep her eyes open.
She runs and eventually makes it to James. He is chatting with Inspector Seager, SFPD. He arrives to talk about Baden and the fight which occurred earlier in the night. Sophie raises the issue, but the officer knows. He decides to sit down with Sophie and ask her questions.
Seager has, as it turns out been, also been investigating. He believes that the jump may well have been intentional and that she was “waiting for the right time and place”. Sophie encourages him to call him and encourages him on to the next stage.

James confronts Harrison to ask him to stop the involvement. We’ll wait to see if he’s involved in Baden’s murder.
Sophie takes a shower and then plunges into the water. It doesn’t seem like it works, at least not on the surface. A side note: The drip tap can be quite irritating.
Sophie decides to toss some of her stuff, not realizing their emotional meaning and wanting to get rid all the extra stuff she doesn’t need. James is encouraged and supported by Sophie to be there. They believe they can get through this together.

Hannah is happy with Sophie’s improvement in therapy. Hannah admitted that this was a new case for her, and she wasn’t sure it would work. It appears that it worked, and Sophie thanked Hannah for her assistance. Then she left.
The night ends with a large work party. Sophie offers a harsh evaluation of Harrison. He’s proud of his smugness and believes he’s a good man. James will see him for the person he really is. Harrison’s smile completely disappears when he hears this.
Sophie’s joy appears to be fake as she drives her car to the bridge and then goes for another run. The police call James next. James receives a call from the police requesting information about Sophie’s suicide history. It would seem that this is happening again. However, we will need to wait and see if it is.

James was left a note at home. Sophie opens it and he is blamed for Baden’s demise. She says they can’t go back. She is determined to do the right things.
Caroline visits James to comfort him and says she’s done it before and might return. Hannah suspects Sophie may have committed suicide because she showed all signs of suicide, including lying to people and over-emotional behavior.
James struggles to make his life orderly after this. Harrison confronts James over Sophie’s behavior, but James bites back and venomously points out that Baden was killed, along with his marriage. James accepted the fall because he didn’t want Harrison to be sent to prison for life and knew that Sophie would defend him.

James is returning home when he discovers something shocking. Caroline was the one with $3.1 million in this account. James is angry and rushes to the bank. He discovers that the money account he was looking for doesn’t exist. James discovers that Sophie could have stolen the money. He flees.
James is able to log into Sophie’s Apple account, and sees a Sophie video. He informs her in a nonchalant way that they are not compatible. “An innocent man was killed because of what your did” I don’t mean innocent, but he was stalking her. James, Sophie believes is deserving of this because he lied and changed their lives after she woke.
Flashbacks show more about Sophie’s behavior. She found a blue key that had the word “terminus” written on it. It belonged in a nearby storage facility. She spots one bag on the ground, and she heads there. The bag contains a phone, cash, and Eliza Huntley’s contact information. Tess’ passport is also included. It includes everything she will need to escape.

We then return to James. He hears Sophie say goodbye to her and gives her a “see ya on the other side.” Sophie adopts her Tess personality and returns to the UK. James sends Sophie his message reminding her that she is loved and that her past was dangerous. Ending on a cliffhanger, a woman leaves a bar (probably Eliza Huntley’s character) to inquire about Tess.
Episode Review

So after meandering our way through 8 episodes of a mystery-but-not-really-a-mystery, we’re baited the prospect of a second season where we explore more of Sophie/Tess’ past. It is hard to believe that we would ever want to. Sophie was a terrible protagonist.
James, Caroline, Harrison, and Harrison might not all be perfect, but this is the protagonist. We should stand behind him.
Episode 6 was a way for Sophie to forget her past and heal any hurt feelings. It showed her confronting her past and her manipulative methods, including her affair with James and constant lies to push James’ career forward.

Sophie ends by saying that James should be punished for all his mistakes in work, and especially her jump. This hook was actually a bait and switch, making it more of a puzzle than a true whodunit.
Apple’s decision to allow a sequel remains to be determined. However, given the mixed reactions from audiences and critics to the film, I don’t see why it should be. Although we have covered the most important plot points, many questions remain unanswered. This was a great finale.
